Traditional carver's art - a family affair Tramp-art.comGlen Van Antwerp carves in Michigan's lumberjack traditions. His grandfather passed the skill to his father and (when Glen was 12 years old) they to him. Glen in turn has passed the whittler's skill to his children and on to the grandchildren. Glen descends from generations of loggers who practiced the art of Cedar Fan carving in their idle time. The cedar fan, carved from a single piece of wood, is a display of loosened but inner locking vanes or feathers. The fanned-out whimsey can take various forms: the vanes receiving detailed carving or the whole work presented in the form of a bird carving. Part of Glen's success is in the search for the right piece of knot free, straight grained White Cedar, cedar that is harvested from Glen's ancestral woodlands. Glen's art has been recognized in books, the media and his carvings are found in public and private collections. Glen has received the "Michigan Heritage Award," one of only two wood-carvers to receive such recognition.
