A father & son make tramp art  Tramp-art.com

Ed Olson, holding his and his Father's tramp art

Edward Olson Jr. holding a tramp art wall pocket he made (right) and one his father made (left). Edward feels the fan tail decoration at the top of his father's pocket is to small. Aside from enlarging the fan tail decoration, many of Ed's subsequent pockets follow his father's design.  Ed considers himself a "transitional" maker" as tramp art has been a family affair.  Today Ed crafts a great variety of tramp art items including furniture, picture frames, boxes, wall pockets, shelves, candle sticks and hanging cabinets.  He has even experimented in fashioning from sheet metal, ditty boxes. The boxes mimic tramp art through crimping the edges of  metal sheets and  then layering the sheets into pyramids!      Ed also practices, an all but lost form of a tramp art technique, known as "Crown of Thorns."

"Our tramp art has been scattered over most of the past century; starting with my father in the first decade.  It was made as gifts, my father never sold a piece, and I only in last few years.  But we made literally hundreds of other items for sale and repaired many items.  My father turned many items on the lathe, including many cross glued woods for bowls etc.

Edward A. Olson SR. born 1892,  Edward  A. Olson JR . born 1927

I am a retired carpenter my dad a Millwright (died 1973) There should be a lot of my pieces out there, running the gamut from picture frames (some tramp art style) to large pieces of furniture, etc.. We have marked pieces since the teens. Some but not all.

My fathers maternal grand parents were born in Schleswig-holstein (Germany) in the 1820s. Perhaps they influenced my father as they lived until the teens, both in their 90s."

Sincerely,   E. A. Olson JR
