Higgins_photo.jpg (30112 bytes) "I have always had a love for wood, working with my hands comes naturally. From the time I was a teenager, making model houses in my building arts class, I knew I would be a carpenter. Living in the same town as the Hermitage (the famous guild of tramp art crafters), I would visit their workshop and found I was intrigued with what I saw. I knew I had to try it myself. I began to experiment finding my own style as I’ve gone along."

Joe Higgins found his own style as seen in this meticulously notched and pyramided 3 drawer lift lid box (it’s 36’ high!). He also mixes tramp art and fretwork. A newspaper article,* about Joe’s work and his studio in Cohoes, New York, shows a photograph of combined woodworking techniques: a tramp art, fret work lamp and shade. The article mentions that Joe does restoration to damaged antique tramp art. Joe preserves the craft by both his making and fixing.

100+ years ago, tramp art became popular, spreading from one crafter to another. This remains true today, as tramp art is reinvented through the skill of crafters like Joe Higgins.
