innovations in folk crafts     Tramp-art.com

Rick Ladd's interests span a great number of old crafts, he is always tinkering & tweaking them in his innovative way. Rick (born 1959) is famous for his creations made with bottle caps. Tramp art is very familiar to him as seen in this white no-notch box . Though this box lacks the notching typical of tramp art, a look at his penknife whimsey shows an extravagant use of notch carving.

"Few activities thrill me as much as whittling chains, balls-in-cages, and other stunts from a single block of wood" (Quoting Rick Ladd; Chip Chats; Jan. & Feb. 1997; page 90)

To learn the craft of prison art (paper folding i.e. cigarette packs and gum wrappers) Rick corresponded with a prisoner at Trenton State Prison. Rick weaves comic books into lampshades and other things.

Bottle caps have preoccupied Rick and he has recycled them into picture frames, lamps, clock cases, used them to decorate tables, chairs and all varieties of furniture. His bottle cap work has received a lot of media attention, gallery & museum exhibitions.

Folk crafts are Rick’s fascination and his work challenges the distinction between craft and art.
