The creative impulse can find expression in a variety of
mediums. George Borum (born 1913) is such a crafter and his impulses are as
varied as his creations. George is a retired sign painter and his business card
reads "originate, fabricate, fashion, contrive, devise, improvise, design,
depict, promote, hatch, make-up, scheme and invent." Those who know him
know he left out amaze and entertain

Sample of George's penmanship
(1998) at 84 years old
As a young man George was an accomplished
"Penman". He penned the Lords Prayer on a square inch of
paper, on the edges of a business card and on a toothpick. He wrote his
name, address and phone number on a grain of rice. George's
correspondence continues to show an exceptional skill in calligraphy

George's compulsion to create is summarized by his work.
He has made over 150 models of steamboats, 54 of which he sold in 1967.
He has made model covered bridges and entire miniature towns.
George has carved over 2000 wooden knives, daggers and swords. At a
given moment he might have on hand collections of 60+ Pennsylvania barn
hex signs and 50+ unique walking sticks. |

George crafts boomerangs or "Borum-o-rangs" that
he enjoys throwing and has made 200+ over the years. Seen in this

George is a "Priviologist", an authority on
outhouses, has written a book on the subject* and made over 350 outhouse
models including tramp art examples. Many of his outhouse models are
humorous and George notes an example where " there is a very small
hole for babies and a real big hole for politicians"*
