99-121 tramp art barometer case illustrated in BY Hand, Janice Eaton Kilby, Lark Books, page 75

Michael Cornish (born 1953) a picture framer by trade, purchased two curious boxes in 1978. It was not until later that he learned these were part of a larger body of work called tramp art. Since then Michael has dedicated himself to all aspects of this craft. Selections from his collection of historic examples have formed the basis of four museum exhibits on tramp art. He has published his research in various periodicals and co-authored a book on tramp art.*

In the 1980s, Michael began meticulously crafting  tramp art gifts for his family and friends.  He now accepts commissions.  He follows the "obsessive compulsive" traditions of tramp art; so labor- intensive that his work is a labor of love for the craft. Michael experiments with paint as shown in this polychrome barometer case which also illustrates his use of innovative form. Michael’s work is cutting edge yet he remains true to the recycling tradition in tramp art, his creations largely crafted from found materials.
