98-192 wall pocket by Daniel Strawser, Jr.

|
inscribed on back:
" I first recall tramp art, at a
collectors house which my parents frequently visited on their antiquing trips through
Berks & Lancaster Co. Pa. I recall being in awe of
the "crown of thorns" picture frame which held one of my
father’s early Pa. German fracturs.
Since my father was a wood carver and my mother a
painter I was always drawing, painting, whittling & building as a
child. My grandfather who is a self taught carpenter and carver used to
give me nails, hammer, & wood scrapes to keep me busy when I spent
weekends there. I was taken to many craft & antique shows while I
was growing up.
As a teen I helped my mother and grandfather at the Kutztown German
Festival where my grandfather signed up to demonstrate tramp art. I
demonstrated eleven long, hot July days under a tent in front of
thousands. I notched & notched & notched! With the help of my
grandfather who supplied me with fruit crate slates, a small miter
box saw and good conversation I was discovering myself and what I love
to do.

The Strawser and Gotshall
family has
a proud history as carvers, painters and folk artists that goes back several
generations. The family's shared identity with rural Pennsylvania is a
reoccurring theme in their work.
As individuals and as a family the Strawser's and Gotshall's work has been
exhibited in several museums. Country Living magazine (November
2000) has profiled the families tramp art and has sponsored a
limited-edition tramp art frame and heart box bearing the "Country Living
Guild Seal."
